Getting to Know You – Erin McQuade

What experience do you have working with teachers, kids, students, schools?

Well, growing up I considered myself to be a kid for the better part of my life. It wasn’t until I turned 18 that I realized I was an adult by the laws of this country. Up until last May, I had been a student my whole life. So I guess you could say I have more experience with students than kids because I was a student for 20-some odd years. I also used to be a ski instructor and would teach kids how to ski. Relevant? Not sure, but it was a fun winter job!

What is your job position at ATLT?

I’m a 3-D and 2-D artist. I create a lot of the models and graphics that are used in the game, such as buildings, characters, and graphs.

What is the best thing about working for an educational game company?

The best thing is showing that games can be more than just entertainment and can be a useful tool in the learning process…and the fact that I get to make cool things things on the computer. I mean, c’mon, making games is pretty sweet.

How has math affected you in your life?

When I got into physics and higher-level math, I realized that physics and gravity seem to obey their own laws in movies. No, you can’t jump out of a space ship and reach terminal velocity without a parachute and live; this was a tough pill to swallow.

On a more serious note I do think math is essential, and I wouldn’t be where I am today, designing games, without it.
