Getting to Know You – Amy Newton

What experience do you have working with teachers, kids, students, schools?

Prior to working for AT & LT, I had a lot of classroom teaching experience. I started teaching special education in 1999 in New York after completing my graduate degree in education. After that, I decided to move down south for more favorable weather (and a relaxed lifestyle by the beach). I taught high school English for 8 years in Virginia Beach before moving even further south, to Garner, North Carolina. I taught middle school math and language arts for two years in North Carolina, and then I became a mother to boy/girl twins! On top of teaching, I also coached junior varsity and varsity sports, advised a high school class of over 500 students (and planned proms, homecoming, etc.), and advised a national community service club called the Key Club. I also mentored many aspiring teachers during their student teaching experiences.

How has math affected you in your life?

Math has affected my life in a positive way. Without using math, I wouldn’t be able to partake in my favorite hobby — sewing! I am constantly measuring fabric before sewing. Before I even get to that point, I have to figure out how much fabric to buy, and if my estimate is off, I end up wasting money on fabric that I won’t need. When I actually get to the sewing part, if I am off by even a half an inch, my clothes might be too tight, so careful measurements are essential.

What is the best thing about working for an educational game company?

The best part about working for an educational company is the thought that I am helping students learn math in a more interesting way; who doesn’t love to play video games? I know that math is a very difficult subject in school (in my opinion, the MOST difficult, by far), and our game makes learning math fun…really fun! I love the game’s graphics, and I can’t wait to see what happens next as Pi navigates through Greenville looking for the missing orbs. I also like working with talented professionals who are always open to change, just as technology always changes.
